Improve Your Design Sense
You don’t need to have a natural talent to be a great designer. Today, I want to share with you three simple steps you can take to improve your design skills.
Let me summarize the three steps from the video above.
The first step is to ‘train your eyes’. Continuously look at the best-designed websites. You can go on Google and find lots of collections of best-looking website designs. Go through them and make notes and screenshots of what you like.
The second step is to learn how to build the elements you like. Learn to copy the best looking designs using your favorite web design tool. For me, it’s Blocs for Mac or Squarespace, but it can be anything you want as long as it has the freedom and capability to create custom looking websites.
By the way, I am not saying you should just copy the work of their designers and sell it as your own, not at all. I am saying that once you understand and learn how others do it, it will be easier for you to create your own designs.
The most important part here is to do it element by element, step by step. Do not try to learn how to build all of the design elements at once. First, do it for one aspect of the website, and once you are comfortable with it, move to another.
The final step is to practice. Build the same element many times, and you will learn so much about the process, it will help you get comfortable with it very fast. When you get to this point, you won’t even need to look at any other website designs to build your own, because you will have your own personalized version of this element in your mind, and your hands will remember how to create it from scratch using the web design tool of your choice.
Follow these three steps to build a portfolio of elements you can use in your projects. After you cover the essentials, you will have your own ‘toolbox’ of website elements you can use in any of your websites.
Summary
Go through the best-designed websites, make notes of the designs you like, learn how to rebuild them from scratch using your web design app of choice, and then customize it to your liking by creating your own design style. After that, just practice, practice, and practice.
